Developer Update v2.4.0 — Performance & Quality of Life

We are excited to roll out Update v2.4.0, which focuses on two main areas: expanding your creative tools and ensuring the game runs smoothly from start to finish.

This update introduces Whispering Pines content to the custom game creator, completely rebuilds the setup flow for better usability, and addresses a performance leak that was affecting longer sessions. Here is everything you need to know.

Whispering Pines in Custom Games

You can now fully utilize Whispering Pines content when building custom games. This opens up a new layer of storytelling freedom—you can mix and match characters, clues, and story cards from both the base game and the expansion, or design a pure Whispering Pines experience with your own specific tweaks.

A Rebuilt Game Creator

We have rebuilt the game creation flow from the ground up. The previous "single-page" design was becoming cluttered and difficult to manage. The new interface breaks the process into five focused steps:

  1. Settings: Edition and language selection.
  2. Characters: Roster selection and player assignment.
  3. Clues: Determining what information is revealed and when.
  4. Story Cards: Customizing the narrative beats.
  5. Review: A final diagnostic check before launch.

We also added a progress tracker so you always know where you stand, along with clearer indicators for which editions you own to prevent confusion about content access.

Now Available on Mobile & Tablet

Because of this redesign, the custom game builder is no longer desktop-only. The new responsive interface means you can build and set up complex custom scenarios comfortably from your phone or tablet.

Under the Hood: Performance Wins

We received reports that the app was becoming sluggish toward the end of longer sessions. After a deep dive, we identified the culprit: event listeners were stacking up over time rather than cleaning themselves up.

We have patched this memory leak. A full 90-minute session should now feel just as crisp and responsive in the final ten minutes as it did in the first ten.

Additionally, we optimized conversation switching. Previously, loading a chat forced the game to recalculate participant data every single time. Now, it only performs that work when a change actually occurs, resulting in snappier navigation.

Bug Fixes

  • Location Sync: Picking a location from the dropdown now updates the status everywhere immediately. No more mismatches between the sidebar and your profile.
  • Ghost Sessions: Starting a new game no longer inadvertently pulls in "ghost data" from your previous lobby.
  • Message Downloads: The export button on the game review page has been fixed. You can once again download your full conversation logs after the game ends.
  • Voicemail Fidelity: Audio recordings now capture at a higher sample rate, resulting in significantly clearer playback.
  • Avatar Display: Fixed an edge case where characters without a fully assigned player would appear without a portrait.
